The Tuesday Afternoon Grab Bag
Last night the Jays once again rallied to defeat the Seattle Mariners 3-1. R.A Dickey was in fine form allowing a run over seven and two-thirds innings. Mark DeRosa was the offensive hero for the Jays hitting a 2 run single in the eighth in a pinch hit appearance. Tonight Josh Johnson goes to the mound for the Jays against Seattle’s King Felix. If Johnson, who is pitching for his rotation spot according to what Alex Anthopolous told his media scrum on Sunday, is off his game, this game could be over early, Which is the last thing the bullpen needs right now.
AA’s STATE OF THE 2013 JAYS
Also during AA’s chat with the media it was suggested that along with the possibilities of seeing Kyle Drabek and Drew Hutchison up with the big team in September, They could also bring up Marcus Stroman and Sean Nolin. The Jays are high on Stroman, who pitched in Philadelphia during the last weekend of Spring Training as I way to give him a taste of what the big leagues are like. Nolin was up early in the year for a spot start that didn’t exactly go well. AA didn’t say for sure if they would be up, but that there has been talks about maybe having a look see at them in September. It couldn’t hurt could it?
Anthopolous was asked about fixing the SP/2B hole. They were deemed the most important parts to improve. He did spend more time on the struggles of the starting pitching. He also said that the financial resources would be available, I don’t expect them to go crazy but they probably throw Josh Johnson a qualifying offer and probably not much else. If anything the improvements probably get done thru trades as to not max out those available resources. Lets not forget Jose Reyes and Mark Buerhle get big raises and R.A Dickey’s extension kicks in next season.
Alex was also asked about the lack of defence on this team and the mental errors and he didn’t really go into the answer he mentioned they have to get better. He also mentioned that maybe guys are trying to hard, which is a valid point. When asked about Melky Cabrera Anthopolous says he expects him back healthy and able to contribute to the lineup next season. So maybe that’s the last we’ve seen of Melky for the season. A question was asked if Esmil Rogers struggles had anything to do with the fact that he has thrown more innings this year than he did all of last year. AA said it was something to keep an eye on and it’s not out of the realm of Possibility that Rogers gets shut down at some point.
ALWAYS BE CLOSIN’
Casey Janssen picked up his 20th save of the season in last nights win over the Mariners, It’s his second straight years of 20 saves. The last time a Blue Jay closer had back to back 20 seasons was Billy Koch who recorder 30 plus saves three years in a row from 1999 to 2001. Just proves how hard it is to find a consistent closer. The Jays have that in Janssen and with Casey under control for next season it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see that streak hit 3 years in a row.
